The helicopter crash took place in a lava field near the southernmost tip of Hawaii's Big Island on Wednesday evening.

All six crash victims were safely evacuated from the site, but two are in serious condition, said Cyrus Johnasen,

Hawaii County's public information officer. Johnasen said the helicopter crashed near South Point,

the southernmost tip of the Big Island, at about 5 p.m. Initially, first responders were unable to access the scene by vehicle,

so the Hawaii Fire Department dispatched two helicopters for assistance. The victims were airlifted to nearby ambulances,

, while the pilot was extracted shortly after and is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

An 18-year-old woman had been seriously injured and was in a critical condition.
